From the outset, it must be acknowledged that there’s little in the way of good news when it comes to overheating. Periods of higher temperatures, like periods of extreme cold, lead to increased mortality, especially among older people. And when the changing climate is factored in, hotter summers in the UK will become ‘the new normal’. In 2022, the Climate Change Committee (CCC) published Risks to health, wellbeing and productivity from overheating in buildings. The report’s leading conclusion is that impacts from periods of high temperatures are already being felt across the country, with the south of England and London being at particular risk.
